While the threat of crime and terrorism has increased due to this lack of enforcing immigration policies, illegal immigration probably has its greatest impact on the United States’ economy. As the United States endures one of its worst economic crises yet, it is safe to say that immigration and its effects on the United States’ economy is a significant problem. One of the most controversial topics in regards to immigrants and the economy has to do with jobs and wages. Many argue that illegal immigrants actually benefit the economy, in that they subsidize the labor force and provide the country with individuals willing to work the jobs that most citizens simply do not want. Ramanujan Nadadur, a Master’s student in Forced Migration at Oxford, claims that “illegal immigrants are more willing than legal immigrants and native workers to take jobs where high labor turnover and poor working conditions have become a part of the labor process” (6). T hese illegal immigrants supply the country with highly necessary workers to complete labor-intensive work. However, the reality is that these immigrants are taking American jobs and even displacing certain Americans and legal immigrants from rights that they have legally earned. More accurately, the main issue here is in regards to wages. Each year, thousands of undocumented workers come to the United States who would anything to obtain any sort of job. Taking advantage of these illegal immigrants in their desperate states, businessmen of the United States choose to pay them significantly lower wages. Sure, this concept sounds great in theory. The United States is basically given an endless supply of extremely cheap labor; yet academic research paper guidelines, this cheap labor negatively affects other workers. According to Steve Malanga, contributing editor of City Journal and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, studies show that these illegal immigrants significantly push down the wages of United States’ workers, potentially pushing some of these workers out of certain industries. A recent study indicates that this wave of low-wage immigration has actually driven the average wage of native-born, low-skilled workers by nearly $1,200 annually. In other words, as the illegal immigrants accept United States’ labor jobs, they displace United States’ workers, and drive down the average wages of the rest of the work force. In order to answer this question essay about endangered animals, it is important to examine illegal immigration and its presence in the United States. Currently, the number of illegal immigrants in the United States stands at an estimated 12 million and rising. With such strict policies in place by the government, how so many undocumented immigrants can enter the country each year is unclear. Firstly, it is necessary to understand that there are two different types of illegal immigrants. There are immigrants who actually come to this country legally via visa or green card an essay about science, but become illegal by over-staying their visas or green cards. The other type of illegal immigrant is an individual who simply illegally crosses the border and enters the country without contacting the United States’ government in any way. With the current laws and policies regarding immigration, it is fair to say that the government has a much better and easier time tracking and enforcing laws upon immigrants turned illegal, simply due to the fact that the government is aware of their presence in the country. However, the other type of illegal immigrant is more difficult to track because the government is ignorant of their presence in the country. While considering the presence of illegal immigrants within the United States, certain factors that inevitably undermine and inhibit the United States’ immigration policies begin to emerge. Firstly, considered the third largest country in the world, the United States possesses many borders and areas of entry into the country. Considering its size and vast expansion of borders, the United States has an immense amount of areas that it needs to protect form illegal entry. Truthfully, with such large borders, there is simply no way to fully protect and prevent illegal immigration entirely. Despite major improvements in border control, including armed patrolmen and high-reaching metal fences, the border is just too large critical thinking essay topics, and many immigrants still enter the country illegally. In fact, according to Wayne Cornelius, the distinguished director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the University of California at San Diego, out of the 1.5 million immigrants who enter the country each year, 500,000 of them are undocumented (Cornelius 7). Due to the many illegal immigrants who unnoticeably cross the borders, the United States government is unable to enforce its immigration policies, such as distributing visas or deporting illegal immigrants, and is forced to permit these immigrants to live within the country. National Review 37.4 (2005): 302-05. We live in a society which is made up of immigrants from different corners of the globe. It is obvious that as Americans we have forged an immense successful country that will continue to prosper at the hands of various ethnic groups. Immigration reform seeks to blame the innocent immigrant instead of accepting reality and dealing with the actual factors involved in our economic woes, unemployment rates, and wage fluctuations. The easiest manner in which to deal with our national problems is to blame the defenseless. It seems highly crude to think that we as Americans have not learned to stop blaming the immigrant for our own problems do you write essays in first person, since we are a nation of immigrants as well. Immigration reform is not a means of ending an economic problem here in the U.S. but rather an effective means of blame and a tool to supplement discrimination.
Other proponents of immigration reform argue that immigration serves only one purpose; and that is to reap the benefits of welfare. If this is true, and immigrants are flooding our nation to live off of billions of American tax dollars, then why are the majority of our tax dollars used for military spending, government projects, and senseless ventures and not on welfare? We are unknowingly blaming government taxation on welfare and not on the government and the system itself. It seems plausible that welfare exists as a means of justifying taxation; and the limits to the amount of taxation are boundless. This certainly creates an innate disgust for welfare personal statement essay samples for college, which is highly evident. As we blame welfare for our tax woes, we tend to direct our anger at the recipients of welfare. Most of these people are Americans how can i write essay in english, but we prey on the weak and defenseless, thus drawing a direct correlation between immigrants and welfare. Furthermore writing a contrast essay, immigrants have no preconceived notion as to what welfare is. They don t say, Hey, there s a thing called welfare over in U.S. let s go reap it s benefits. Immigrants are here to meet demands of a workforce that is non-existent within our country. Unfortunately, they are endowed with minimal rights and it is easier and more feasible to point the finger of blame on them rather than blaming those that are actually at fault. By and large good college acceptance essays, the foreign students end up enriching the pool of American engineers. Surveys have found that almost half of the foreigners who earn doctorates in science and engineering at American universities stay in the U.S. to work. A good number eventually become citizens. Why People Immigrate? A common misconception that immigrants “take jobs away from native-born Americans,” this does not appear to be true. The U.S. Department of Labor reviewed nearly 100 studies on the relationship between immigration and unemployment and concluded that “neither U.S. workers nor most minority workers appear adversely affected by immigration.” Immigration brings brainpower that enriches the whole society. Almost one-third of all Americans who hold advanced engineering or computer sciences degrees are immigrant. According to the National Science Foundation essay on romeo and juliet, non-U.S. citizens currently account for 42%, or about 30,000, of all engineering graduate students at U.S. schools and almost half of all electrical engineering and computer science grad students. Are they crowding out Native-born Americans? That’s doubtful. If a qualified native-born American wants an engineering degree, he can get it. This is going to be a more social-political discussion than anything else. So the topics here are going to focus in this area. The topics then would look at how immigration effects society, how immigration laws are good or bad. Threats and benefits to the government and the society.
